In the late 1950s, amidst the excitement of the American automotive industry, GM’s Chief Designer Bill Mitchell embarked on a secret project that would forever change the landscape of car design. In 1959, Mitchell revived the bones of the SS race car, purchasing its chassis for a mere $500. With the help of a talented design team, including the legendary Peter Brock, Mitchell transformed this foundation into the stunning Corvette Stingray Racer.


The clandestine nature of this project was driven by the American Manufacturers Association's ban on factory-supported racing, pushing Mitchell to fund and develop the Stingray Racer discreetly. This covert operation led to the creation of one of the most iconic concept cars in automotive history.

Design Innovation: The Heart of the Stingray Racer

The Corvette Stingray Racer’s design was a masterclass in innovation. Inspired by the sleek lines of European sports cars like the Alfa Romeo Disco Volante and the Ghia IXG, the Stingray Racer boasted a lightweight fiberglass body reinforced with aluminum and later balsa wood in high-stress areas. This innovative approach resulted in a dry weight of just 2,200 pounds—nearly 1,000 pounds lighter than the production cars of its time.


One of the car’s most striking features was its aerodynamic, shark-like silhouette. The 92-inch wheelbase and the thin, fiberglass skin gave the Stingray Racer a futuristic appearance that hinted at the design direction of future Corvettes. The car's design elements, such as the protruding grille snout and the thin, streamlined body, were ahead of their time, setting new standards for automotive aesthetics.

Underneath its sleek exterior, the Stingray Racer was a beast on the track. Initially powered by a fuel-injected 283-cubic-inch V-8 engine producing 315 horsepower, the car was a formidable competitor. With its four-speed manual transmission and de Dion rear suspension, the Stingray Racer offered exceptional handling and performance.


In the capable hands of Dr. Dick Thompson, the Stingray Racer made its racing debut at Maryland's Marlboro Raceway on April 18, 1959, finishing fourth. It went on to claim an SCCA National Championship in 1960, showcasing its prowess on the race track. Mitchell's commitment to racing the car extensively helped refine its design and performance, making it a true test bed for technical innovations.

After its successful racing career, the Stingray Racer was modified for exhibition as an experimental show car.
