Motor Trend: The C7 Corvette Body is Done!

by Keith Cornett on December 2, 2010
As the C7 Corvette project moves along, gird your loins for many of these prognostications about the status of the new car, including new features and options that are being considered. Today’s rumor about the next generation Corvette is a two-fer from the MT Confidential column on page 17 of Motor Trend’s December 2010 issue.

Motor Trend “MT CONFIDENTIAL” editor Mike Connor says:

“The C7 Corvette body is done, after a two-design in-house competition at GM design. Like the C6 that launched as a 2005 model, the 2013 or 2014 Corvette will be an evolutionary update of the current car, say a C6.5.

One sticking point on the engineering side is whether Chevrolet can apply cylinder deactivation to the V8, though it’s coupled to the rear-mounted transmission.

Engineers are reluctant to try new solutions to the situation, because the solutions could result in problems with drivetrain quality or power.

Why all the interest in cylinder deactivation in a V8-powered sports car? Because post-2016 fuel economy standards are expected to dictate it…”

  1. So basically what do we know?

    1. We do know it will sport evolutionary design. (C6.5)
    2. We do know that it will or might have split windows (Ed told that in an interview)
    3. We do know that it will have an overall better quality (many insiders claim that, and frankly it is a logical move)

What is the timeline of this car?

First we hear rumors (as every time before), that it will have a mid engine layout. Then we hear that GM stopped this development due to the Crisis. Ok, then we hear that it will look a bit different to the current one to appeal to younger buyers and Porsche buyers and so on and the C8 will be revolutionary (whatever that means)
Now we learn that neah, actually its not like that, it will be a C6.5.
Correct me if I'm wrong but it was like this all the time. I remember 10 years ago on the Corvette forums we had the same discussion. Once the Tigershark concept s'posed to be the next Vette, then the Avelate and every time a new modified, tuned Vette hit the streets people came that is the next one.
And then voila the C6 came along. It didnt look like the Tigershark, didnt look like the Avelate and NOTHING what MT predicted either. You know best, you have your magazines.
What Im saying is GM Design cant go wrong!
Have some faith, they know what and how to do it. (Malibu, Enclave, Camaro, Insignia, CTS II, Cruze, Sonic, you name it - all of them success stories) Furthermore they are RECENT stories, not 20years ago.

It is highly probable that the C6.5 interior will be improved. They already gave us a peek with the latest products. So they CAN DO IT.
